Valentine’s Day History

Valentine's day

Valentine’s Day has a mysterious past and unclear origins. The origin of Valentine’s Day is the subject of several theories, the most well-known of which links the celebration to St. Valentine, a Christian martyr.

1. St. Valentine’s Day: According to a popular theory, Valentine’s Day started with a Roman priest named Valentine in the third century AD, during Emperor Claudius II’s reign. As he felt that unmarried men were better soldiers, the emperor banned young soldiers’ marriages. However, Saint Valentine continued secretly marrying young lovers. Finally, he was arrested, and legend has it that he sent the first “Valentine” card, a note of appreciation, to the jailer’s daughter before his execution.

2. Ancient Roman and Pagan Origins: According to a few scholars, Valentine’s Day originated from pagan and ancient Roman festivities. The mid-February Lupercalia festival, dedicated to fertility and purification, may have influenced the timing of Valentine’s Day. Young men would select names of females from a jar during Lupercalia, and the matches usually led to marriages.

3. Christianization of a Pagan Festival: As Christianity expanded, the Church attempted to convert ancient pagan celebrations. To reduce the influence of the pagan ceremonies, the Lupercalia feast was replaced by the Feast of St. Valentine.

4. Literary Connections: In the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became more associated with romantic love. Chaucer and other medieval poets helped to romanticize the day and further connect it to declarations of love in their writings.

5. Commercialization in the 19th Century: In the 19th century, Valentine’s Day card exchanges and other small gifts of affection became increasingly common. Valentine’s Day gained popularity when mass-produced cards were first made available in the middle of the 1800s.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world and goes beyond romantic love. The day is celebrated in several countries, including Argentina, France, Mexico, South Korea, and Britain as well as the United States, Australia, and Canada.
